There are many different ways in which we learn the guitar and one of the best ways is by watching some of your favorite players and copying their style. The next time you go out to see a band observe the guitarist, take note of the way they hold the guitar, their left and right hand technique, their posture, equipment, how they move on stage and anything else that comes to your attention.
The next time you practice remember some of the points you noted and try to adapt these into your own style.
For example, if the player you were watching holds the guitar down low, readjust your strap so it is low, even one notch lower. Notice how this effects your technique. Your left hand will probably “grasp” the neck of the guitar and thumb hang over the fret board - good for damping the low E and A strings.
If on the other hand the player you were watching held the guitar high, almost under his chin, again readjust your strap to mimic this. You may find that this may facilitate left hand technique, allowing greater stretches and flexibility.
As a student of the guitar myself I am always keen to see others play and am amazed at what can be gleaned just by watching. Whatever I am working at the time I will pay particular attention to, even go up to the player and have a chat if the opportunity arises.
